Unexpectedly, the pouring rain soaked all the dried cowpea pods. Dad wasn’t able to move anywhere from the cultivation site because the harvest was ready. I waited for the rain to subside and went and pluck some peas and prayed to the rain God to stop the rain. Like potatoes, sweet potatoes, cowpeas, green gram, and other grams are not much friendly with the rain. But rain is needed for cultivation. As the moisture increases Potatoes get rot likewise grams also get wet and get affected by fungi. Or it gets re-cultivated. I plucked it down as much as I could and went home and let it dry a bit. With God’s grace next day was a sunny day so my father, I and Aunty Menike got together and plucked two big sacks full of Cowpeas. We are unable to pluck more than that again in the evening rain started. Now the seasons are upside down. The Rainfall period is now sunny and the sunny days are now rainy. Due the continues rain for several days half of the cowpea crop was lost due to the lack of sunshine. Now farmers have good experience in Profit and Loss. But changing the pattern of nature is not a good thing at all. It was about a week later that the cowpeas were well dried and taken.
Making cakes with green gram is a common thing in our home. So I thought I’d try cowpea instead of green gram and make a cake for the evening tea. Three to four hours soaked peas will boil within ten minutes. In the meantime, I heated the pan with brown sugar, butter, vanilla, sweet orange juice, and kithul Treacle and made the mixture I wanted for the cake.
Sieved the Baking powder, Salt, Cardamom, Cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon powder with flour. Put the boiled cowpeas in a wooden mortar and grind well. I add the ground Cowpeas with heat to the mixture and stir it. Also added to the mixture are the plums which are heated with Sweet Orange Juice. Once stirring the mixture you will feel the nice aroma. After pouring the mixture onto a tray, Use the peels of orange as topping. Before keeping the tray in the oven I added more cashews for topping. Meanwhile, I boiled dried Bael Fruit to make Bael Tea and have it with Treacle Taste Cake. Having the cake with Bael Tea will be the best combination. I do not need to tell you what happened an hour and a half later.
The next day morning we cooked white cowpeas with red cowpeas and made very spicy Lunumiries (Sambol) with dried chillies and salt. My Dad is an expert to Eat Green Gram, Peas, and Cowpeas with Scraped Coconut and Linumiries. I think today’s Lunumiries bit spicy because without the piece of Jaggery my Dad drank and finished the Cowpeas Boiled Water.
All these days cooked Red Rice, therefore for a change decided to make Fried Rice and I soaked for cups of Basmati Rice. Cowpea dust helps a lot to ignite the stove. Heat the pan with oil and add the Cardamom, Cloves, nutmeg, Fresh Lemongrass, Cinnamon, Star Anise, Pendan Leaf, and curry leaves. When you feel a nice aroma add the chopped onion and fry until it turns golden brown. Now keep that aside and fry the salt and pepper seasoned meat until it turns to a golden brown. Keep that meat aside and again take add fried onion mix into the pan and add Tomato, Chillie, Curry Powder, Pepper, Turmeric Powder, salt and water. Once it’s boiled add the rice and close the pan and keep for 10 minutes and cook it. After ten minutes once you open the lid no words express the aroma you feel. Decorate the rice pan with the Onion Leaves; keep fried meat and eggs in the middle. Now this fried rice looks like real biryani.
Mom and Dad ate happily. My brother did not quit too. When I saw them eating happily, there were tears in my eyes. I’m just not even aware of it. Our Doggy Sakki ate fruits, I guess last birth Sakki was a Monkey. Yellow watermelon is sweeter than Red Watermelon, because of that Sakki likes to eat yellow watermelon.
